the secret:
The Bridge of Promises
On the way to the Basilica della Salute, starting near the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, the street comes alive with stands selling sweets and fritters. As you get closer to the church, you’ll see stalls where you can buy a candle to light inside the Basilica, a simple but cherished tradition.

Imagine Venice in 1630, devastated by a terrible plague, with thousands perishing. In desperation, the Doge vowed to build a magnificent church if the city was spared. The plague finally ended, and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute was born, becoming a symbol of faith, hope, and gratitude. Even today, every November 21, Venetians cross a special wooden bridge over the Grand Canal to light candles and pray, honoring this centuries-old promise.
